The New Technologies in Exhibition Design: A Case Study

Libyan StandClient: Libyan Tourism Office
Exhibition: World Travel Market 2007
Venue: ExCel Centre, London, UK
Stand Size: 12m x 16m
Budget 35k

With only 5 weeks notice, Access Displays Limited was asked to design and build an exhibition stand for the leading tourism show, World Travel Market 2007, taking place at the ExCel Centre in London.

From initial discussions with the client, a comprehensive brief was developed. The stand would be open on four sides, measuring 12m x 16m. It would be dynamic, practical and reflect the ancient history and diversity of the Libyan culture. Although imposing, the stand would need to be welcoming to visitors, have excellent traffic flow and be visually impressive, whilst clearly representing Libya in all aspects.

From the brief, coloured 3D visuals were produced and a detailed specification developed.

Access Displays Limited's Managing Director, Neil Brown adds, "We are finding that an increasing number of clients are looking for environmentally friendly exhibition solutions, or at least are open to the overall concept, which is now included as part of our normal initial design pitch."

Agreeing this approach, the design and construction details were approved by the client and full working drawings produced. The stand was manufactured using stock components and supporting tubes (made from compressed multi - layered cardboard coils), and was 90% recyclable. All graphics were printed on a biodegradable twill material, using non-toxic inks. Finally the entire stand was set painted with water-based paint.

Mr Anwar Mexwaghi, General Manager of Waha Expo Company representing The Libyan Tourism Office comments, "We certainly stood out at the show and the volume of visitors exceeded all expectations. The stand was completed within budget and the build and project management were excellent. I was very pleased with the overall outcome of the show."

Award Winning Stand: Noma Lights

noma standIn September 2007 a meeting was scheduled with existing client, Noma Lites Limited, to review their 2007 exhibition activity and take a brief for their 2008 requirements.

The first consideration being the Christmas Gift & Wrap Show from 12-16 January 2008 in Harrogate.

The main show objectives included:-

  • a greater focus on new products and the existing core lines in the key area of LED products.
  • noma standgeneration of Christmas 2008 orders.
  • affirming its position to the trade as a key supplier within the Christmas industry.

Based on a 48sq. metre site, open on three sides, the stand would need to incorporate all product displays including new merchandising opportunities; reinforce corporate and category identity through graphics, and have at least one eye catching feature to help attract visitors.

The solution was to combine innovative pre-wired displays, incorporating product and packaging, together with illuminated best stand at show awardexterior panels that changed colour. In addition seating and office areas were included and a central reception added, to manage customer flow.

Stand designed for Harrogate show (48sq. metres) - this highly flexible design formed the basis for the much larger International Spring Fair (96sq. metres) 3-7 Feb 2008 at the NEC.

And was it successful? Marketing Manager Phil Swainston comments, "our stand certainly had the WOW factor with numbers of visitors and orders taken both up on 2007, and we were delighted to receive the 'best stand at show' award from the organizers."
